The Galápagos Islands, 1000 km far from the main land, are within the Ecuadorian territory boundaries and are located in the Galápagos National Park... In 1978, this Archipelago was declared a World Natural Heritage Site. Other places that have been recognized by UNESCO are the cities of Quito (1978) and Santa Ana de los Rios de Cuenca (1999), Sangay National Park (1983). UNESCO has also recognized the traditions and language of the Zaparo´s Nation and the Marine Reserve of the Galápagos Islands.
The most recent UNESCO's world cultural heritage site, recognized in the Ecuadorian territory, is Qhapaq Ñan, more known as the Andean Road System (2014).
Ecuador has submitted other properties on the UNESCO's tentative list: City of Zaruma (1998); the Archaeological Site of Ingapirca (1998); Machalilla National Park (1998); Petrified Forest of Puyango (1998); The pre-Columbian complex of military fortresses of Pambamarca (1998); and Cajas National Park and the Archaeological Ruins of Paredones (2003), Cuenca Old Town (2005).
